What does In The Game do?

In The Game designs and implements physical activity programs for Victorian primary schools. Our goal is to encourage children to be more active, more often, by increasing their enjoyment of physical activity. We focus on improving the student’s physical skills so that they have more confidence and motivation to lead an active lifestyle. We teach them about the benefits of being active regularly, while also focusing on developing life skills such as working as part of a team, showing good sportsmanship and learning to deal with success and defeat.

What are the requirements of a school to take part in the program?

In The Game is structured to be cost-effective and convenient way for primary schools to implement a fantastic physical activity program for their students. For this reason the only requirement of a school is that they have a large open area available for the program to take place. This may be a school oval, netball court, basketball court, gymnasium or hall etc. Everything else is taken care of by us, so each school can just sign up and begin enjoying the benefits of being involved in such a great program.

How long does each session go for?

A suitable structure regarding the number of sessions per week and the length of each session for different year levels is organised to suit each school’s individual circumstances and goals. Sessions are generally run for 30 minutes, 45 minutes or one hour, with the shorter sessions usually more appropriate for younger students and longer sessions for the older students.

Is the classroom teacher required to be present for the delivery of the program?

No. Every In The Game coach has applied for, and been granted Permission To Teach by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (V.I.T). To achieve this qualification each applicant must satisfy the requirements of the V.I.T to demonstrate that they are an acceptable candidate to receive Permission To Teach. This involves the endorsement of a Victorian primary school principal, demonstration that the applicant possesses the skills and experience necessary to fulfil a teaching position in a Victorian primary school as well as a certified criminal record check. Once an application has been accepted and formally endorsed by the registration committee and V.I.T council, each individual is able to perform the duties of a registered teacher at any primary school in the state of Victoria. Therefore each classroom teacher is welcome to use their class’s In The Game session as relief time for planning and assessment.

What is the difference between In The Game and other specialist physical activity programs or regular PE classes?

The biggest difference between our program and others that are on offer, is that we have an equal focus on the development of both physical skills and emotional or life skills. Rather than just improving the student’s physical skills and teaching them about the need to lead an active lifestyle, we are also committed to developing important skills such as co-operation, team work, dealing with success and defeat and learning a lesson from their results. We believe that these skills are so important in all areas of life and therefore we appreciate the opportunity to help the student’s develop their life skills through participation in physical activity and games.

Another major difference is that we do not base our sessions on specific sports. Instead we teach the students a wide range of skills and then put those skills into modified games or activities. By modifying each activity appropriately, every student receives maximum participation and we can ensure that all students are appropriately challenged regardless of their skill level.

And finally, another difference and benefit of In The Game is that we are a hassle-free option for primary schools to implement a wonderful program for their students. A suitable structure is simply organised with each school and we take care of the rest. Principals, teachers and parents can all be confident and satisfied that their student’s are taking part in a program that will have a fantastic influence on their development throughout the their primary school years.

An extreme weather policy, to cater for days of rain or extreme heat, will be organised between In The Game and each school prior to commencement of the program. My child is not very sporty. Will this program be good for them?

Participating in our program is a fantastic way for your child to learn, practice and develop many essential physical activity skills. The entire program is structured so that there is maximum participation from all students, regardless of their skill level. Students are able to work on developing their skills at their own level and we have devised countless modifications to many games and sports to ensure that there is a level playing field for all students. We are extremely aware of the need for all students to feel a certain level of success with each skill or activity in order for them to gain enjoyment from their participation and be motivated to continue taking part in further physical activity.

My child is extremely sporty. Will they gain much benefit from the program?

As mentioned above, the program is structured to ensure that all students are able to develop their skills, regardless of their current ability. This does not only cater for the students who are just learning and developing their skills, we are equally committed to providing a program that is beneficial to the more gifted students and ensures that they are challenged at an appropriate level. By again modifying the games and sports that the students take part in, we are able to set up activities that ensure that all students in the class, from the least sporty to the extremely talented, receive both a challenging and rewarding session each and every week.
